Summary: Pat is a teacher, simple, mapagmahal na anak, dedicated sa trabaho. Sandra is a filthy rich brat at pasaway.

***
These Four Corners

Chapter 1

Puno na ng estudyante ng silid Patricia came in. Every school year, this is what she looks forward to. Fresh faces, mga teenagers na gustong matuto. Natutuwa siyang makita silang ganito. These are the moments na nagpapasalamat siya at pinili niyang magtrabaho sa academe. These are the moments that make her feel alive.

It made a loud thud na ikinagulat ng buong klase. Sabagay ganun naman talaga. Mabuti ngang matakot sila ng maaga, katwiran niya. Fear is respect.

Afterwards, she cleared her throat para magpakilala. Then someone caught her eye, isang babaeng may makapal na make-up sa mukha. And she was chewing on a bubble gum.

“Miss do you belong in this class?” tanong nya habang nakasalubong ang kilay.

“Of course. I have here my registration form. Take a look.” sagot nito na may halong pagtataray na ikinairita ni Patricia. Sandra Mikaela Martinez. “Thanks.” she heard her say pagkatalikod nito.

“My name is Miss Patricia Fatima de Rios. I am your instructor for this class.” tuwid na tuwid ang pagkakatayo nito na animo’y kandidatong nagtatalumpati sa podium. She considers it as her shining moment and that no one should get in the way. And no one ever dared.

Sandra did not care to give her a look. Abala sya sa paglalaro sa kanyang buhok. In fairness, she had this long black hair that was as dark as the night. It was jet black at makintab. Her lips were devil red. Parang mansanas na kapipitas pa lang. Ang noo nito ay nakakunot, perhaps an indication of how bored she was.

Hindi alam ni Pat kung saan ito humugot ng lakas ng loob to cut her off right in the middle of her speech. Her hands tucked inside her pockets but that wasn’t where she fixed her eyes. Those eyes! She praised her silently. She’s tall for her age, about 5’3. Maputi. Balingkinitan ang katawan. Mukhang mayaman at spoiled brat.

She mused.

“I’m 26, Miss Martinez and you’re 17 so everytime you speak to me, gumamit ka ng po at opo.” she insisted. Kumukulo ang dugo ko sa batang ito. Bulong nito.

“Sorry, but you don’t look 26 to me…” sabi niya. “…more like 21. Ang cute mo kasi.” she whispered.

“What did you say?”

“Wala po… Miss de Rios.” sabi nito habang nakangiti exposing her perfect set of teeth. She gave emphasis to the word po perhaps to piss her further to no avail. She had her temper in check. She always does.

After an hour, the bell rang and she dismissed them all.

Prof was fixing her things when through her lateral vision she saw her looking at her. She probably thought Pat was unaware sa kanyang mga panakaw na tingin sa laki ng salaming hawak. Yeah, it was big that she could probably see her pores, alright, but her akward hiding skills betrayed her.

Pat was ready to go when after ten years, she caught her. Hindi sya nakatiis magtanong. “Do you have anything to say to me, Sandra? Kanina ka pa kasi nakatingin as if I’m a walking terrorist.” she asked rather impatienly.

Facing the exits, prof turned her head to look at her one last time. They were locked in an eye-contact at walang gustong magbaba ng tingin. She waited for a few more seconds but she gave her no answer kundi isang kibit-balikat.

Maya-maya, nagkalat nanaman ito ng lagim. “Ma’am…” habol nito. “Stop wearing that lipstick because it doesn’t match your uniform.” she said matter-of-factly at bahagya pang umismid.

"Oh, are you a make up artist now?" she barked back at tuluyang tinalikuran ang kausap. Nakakatatlong hakbang na siya when she softly pinched her lips. Bad choice from Avon. I knew it. She scolded herself.

She then rolled her eyes in frustration dahil ngayon lang siya nakatagpo ng estudyanteng marunong pa sa kanya. Oh, and she even had the guts to say that to her. Sabagay, she never liked wearing make-up. Wala siyang pedigree duon.

Pailing-iling syang nagpatuloy at kada tunog ng heels nya sa sahig reminded her of what to expect. This is going to be a long semester.

Chapter 2

After her third class, Pat returned to the faculty room. She was a very kind woman, parang nanay na niya. Maliit. Mataba. Mabait. She can tell her anything, actually. But what she liked most about her is her talent for preparing the meanest coffee she’s ever tasted!

She froze for awhile when she saw a photo of her parents. They were smiling at her as if egging her on. Just like the old times. She figured.

“Bakit naman?” sabi ng matanda that disrupted her thoughts. As usual, walang cream yan. Just the way you like it.”

“May estudyante akong pasaway. Her name was Sandra Mikaela—“

“Martinez?” sabat nito at umiling.

“You know her, ma’am?”

“But of course! She was my student when I was still teaching at the High School department. Dalawang taon ding nagdrop-out yun, eh.” rebelasyon nito habang nanlalaki ang mata.

“So how old is she kung ganun? Nineteen?” she asked further habang hinihipan ang kape. Matapos makuntento sa tamang init, she sipped a mouthful.

“Yes! And that’s not what you have to know about her.” dagdag pa ni ma’am. She was holding on to her textbooks. “Hindi kataka-takang magpasaway yun dito because her father owns this school.”

“Ho?”pagulat nyang tanong. Kaya pala ang angas niya. She mused.

The others? They were busy selling. From Avon products to house-and-lot, name it may nagtitinda. The faculty is no different from a mini talipapa. One time, their Academic Coordinator stormed inside the room to check on them. To cut the story short, nahuli ang kanilang gimik. The following day, they were given memos na ang sabi: bawal magtinda. For a month, wala talagang sumuway sa kautusan. After awhile, balik ulit sa dati.

Maya-maya, the phone rang. It was Dr. Abesamis, her immediate superior. She wants to see her, asap. Dali-dali niyang inayos ang sarili and headed to her office, it was a good 20 steps away from the faculty room.

She is walking down the hallway when she saw a face she could not forget. She's with her friends giggling at the corridors at sa tapat pa mismo ng “Ssssshh... classes going-on” warning.

She was two meters away from them when the familiar pestering face greeted her. “Hello Patricia Fatima. Would you like to meet some of my friends?” she said in a very bratinella tone. She took notice of how she called her. She hated it when someone calls her by her full first-name. But her anger disappeared after Sandra gave her a wink.

“Miss Martinez, please lang, we’re inside the campus so act appropriately.” Paalala nito. “Hindi tayo magka-barkada.”

“Sus, ang seryoso mo kasi Patricia. Wag ganun, tsk.” she snapped back.

“You need to address me properly before I answer your question!” she countered. “Understood?” humakbang na syang papalayo when she heard the kid talk again. Ang kulit.

“Hey, I just want you to meet my friends. Tumambay talaga kami dito para makita ka nila in the flesh. They all wanted to meet you, diba, girls?” baling nito sa mga kaibigan.

The chubby one approached her and went to her side. “You’re right, Sandra. Your prof is cute and young pa.” sabi nito na bahagya pang dinunggol ang guro sa balikat.

“See?” si Sandra. “Pinagmamalaki kita sa kanila.” she said. Her lips protruding on one side. Pagkatapos, lumakad ito patungo sa direksyon niya and stopped. Last thing Pat knew, she was standing right behind her already. She can feel her body bloody close to her back. “You should be proud, Patricia.” she said. Her warm, minty breath fanned her nape. She felt a sudden surge of electricity dahil naruon ang pinakamalakas nyang kiliti. Sh!t! Ano ba ‘tong batang ito?

Ilang segundo rin ang nakalipas before she was able to respond correctly. “Enough of the pleasantries, guys. I think you should find some place quiet. Try the clinic and get some sedatives.” Pat sent them away giggling. Sedatives talaga?

For a moment, she stood there dumbfounded. Did I just allow those girls to bully me around? And why on hell did I react silly when I felt her breath on my skin?

Chapter 3

“Come in.” She was about to give an excuse for coming in late but the old woman just waved her hand. She was in a good mood.

Dr. Abesamis was a brillian teacher. She finished her masters and doctorate degree in the states. She’s a small woman with sporadic gray-colored hair and tired eyes. She looks pale and does not talk too much. But don’t get deceived by her fragile look, napaka-terror nito.

“Seat down Miss de Rios. May gusto akong ipakilala sa’yo, one of our new scholars. She’ll be taking up Marketing Management.” pagmamalaki niya. “She hails from the province so I need you to look after her when she is on campus. She’ll be here any minute now.”

Oh, crap, she’s making a babysitter out of me.

And as if on cue, the door opened at iniluwa ang batang tinutukoy. Speaking of the devil.

Pinagmasdan niya ang bagong dating mula ulo hanggang paa. Maganda ito. Very exotic. Her eyes were round and clear na napapalamutian ng makakapal na pilikmata. She has laughlines on her cheeks na lalong nagpatingkad ng aura nito. Hanggang balikat ang buhok nito at sadyang alon-alon. A black beauty, indeed. She took notice.

The old lady just smiled at her.

“Patricia, this is Clarita Santiago.” my boss quipped habang inaabot ang file folder ng dalaga. “Our scholar. Clarita, this is Miss Patricia de Rios. Your adviser.”

She held out her hand and said, “Mam, Claire na lang po. Pleased to meet you.”

Pat appreciated the gesture and shook her hand. She noticed that it was rough. Clarita and her family hailed from a humble town in Tarlac.

Claire struck her as a very smart and hardworking young lady. She finished valedictorian from her class na may tumataginting na 93.9 weigthed average sa report card. She thought she was better off taking law or medicine somewhere else.

Kalahating oras din silang nag-kwentuhan with Dr. Abesamis. Pagkatapos nuon ay nagpaalam na siyang bumalik sa faculty room to prepare for her next class. She invited Claire to tag along dahil alam nitong wala pa itong kakilala.

Wheeeew!

Lumingon sila sa pinanggalingan ng tunog. Pat was so irritated to see her again. The little devil was there, this time all alone in the corridor. Was it cigar she’s holding in her hand? Kelan pa pwedeng mag-smoke dito sa campus?

“Patricia, sino yang kasama mo?” she asked. Kagat-kagat pa nito ang pulang-pulang labi.

Prof didn’t bother to flinch. Hindi niya gustong makipag-usap dito. Isa pa, she was running late for her next class. She just pretended na isa itong masamang hangin without form and pictoral property. Yun nga lang, her scent was way too fragrant para ihanay sa masamang hangin.

Uyyyyy! Patricia! Pangungulit nito.

Matapos tumingin sa langit, she turned around to face her. “Do that again Miss Martinez and I’ll report you to the Guidance Office.” sabi niya sa lalong naningkit na mga mata. “And last time I checked, this is a no smoking area!” singhal niya dito. She grabbed the cigar from her left hand and threw it away.

“Okay Ma’am, hindi na po.” Sandra cleared her throat, faked a cough and spoke to Claire. “You’re new here, what is your name?

“Claire—“

“Oh, hi Claire? I see you have been acquainted with my favorite professor.” Inginuso pa nito ang magandang instructor. “I’m Sandra, her favorite student.”

“Yes, hi! Tama ba yung narinig ko, you called Miss de Rios by her first name?” takang tanong nito. Nagpalit-palit ang tingin sa mga taong kaharap. At the back of her mind, natutuwa rin sa mga ikinikilos ni Sandra. She found her pestering really cute.

I don’t want her to feel old and grumpy kasi.” Katwiran nito.

Pat violently protested. “Young lady, excuse me, but I don’t feel old and grumpy. Kung magsusuot nga ako ng uniporme ninyo, they will mistake me for a college student.”

“Yeah, right so why are you wearing those glasses? Yuck!” sabi nito sa napaka-arteng tinig. Pinagkrus pa nito ang braso sa dibdib at sarkastikong ngumiti. Kontrabidang-kontrabida ang dating.

“What’s wrong with my glasses?” tanong nito sabay tingin sa salamin. “It certainly looks great on me!” she said. Then she looked at Claire who nodded in agreement.

“You look like Miss Tapia.” angil nito. “Ewwww…”

Not to be outsmarted, namulsa ito and reminded her of what she said earlier bago pa ito pumasok sa opisina ni Dr. Abesamis. So why are you calling me Miss Tapia now ha? Did you eat your hat, Miss Martinez?”

“Hah! You’re gulli—“

“Sandali po…” putol ni Claire sa usapan. She was shaking her head profusely habang nakataas ang kamay to her sides na parang si Bernardo Carpio na naipit sa nagu-umpugang bato. “…pwede timeout muna? Ma’am, hindi ba po sabi ninyo ililibot nyo ako sa buong campus after your class?” hinawakan nito ang braso ng guro.

“Ah, yes. Sorry, I forgot.” paumanhin nito. “Mabuti pa nga umalis na tayo dito and let this rabid puppy here bite herself.” yun lang at mabilis silang lumakad papalayo.

“Cute puppy that is!” the little devil shouted back. Wait 'til I sink my teeth into you, prof.

Chapter 4

“Okay class, can you tell me what you know about Marketing?”

Ten people raised their hands including Claire. She smiled towards her pero hindi naman ito nagpilit matawag. Prof looked left and right to find a different set of hands para tawagin when she saw Sandra’s face prostrated on her notebook. Mukhang natutulog. Muling sumulak ang dugo sa ulo niya. Sandra can really get into her skin which is rather unusual dahil likas sa kanya ang pagiging pasensyosa.

“Ahem…Miss Martinez!” she said loud enough to make sure the young lady will be startled. “Sleeping again on my class?”

Napapitlag ito. “No, ma’am, just trying to memorize something.” it was a lame excuse na kahit sarili niya ay ayaw maniwala.

“Memorize? Talaga lang ha? And what were you memorizing?” para siyang pulis na nage-interrogate ng snatcher.

“A formula in Algebra? We have a quiz later today.” palusot ulit nito. Prof inched closer to take a look at her notebook. There was nothing there but unintelligible scribbles. No signs of Algebra. No x’s and y’s.

Para hindi tuluyang umalpas ang galit, Pat counted one to ten and reminded herself over and over that Sandra’s father owns the school. Pasalamat ka anak ka ng tatay mo. Pasalamat ka talaga. Lord, pasalamat siya.

“Alright then, can you tell me something about marketing?” she looked down on her kasabay ng pag-angat nito ng mukha. At that point, they were perhaps two inches away from each other. Nikiliti ang kung mayroong ano sa puso niya when she smelled her breath. That intoxicating scent was a combination of cereals and strawberries.

“Marketing is….ahh… selling!” the young brat stammered. “… for profit!” then exclaimed her last words with conviction.

The teacher was impressed. At least she had a point. Pat nodded her head and returned to her desk. May isip din pala ang lokang ‘to.

“Do you agree class?” everyone was nodding their head when Claire stood up.

Sumenyas si Pat dito to encourage her continue what she had to say. She held on to the girl’s classcard na punong-puno na ng points for actively participating in their previous discussions.

“Selling is just part of Marketing. It’s just the tip of the iceberg, actually.” pagbibida nito. “According to the AMA, marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.”

The entire class gave her a round of applause except, who else? Sandra.

She raised her hand to speak. “May pa-iceberg, iceberg ka pang nalalaman?” Nakataas na ang kilay nito. “Why do we have to complicate things? Marketing is selling, that’s how simple it is. Why do we plan ahead, why do we study our customers? It’s because we want them to purchase from us! Right, ma’am?” baling nito kay Pat.

“You have a point, Miss Martinez. But what we need is a working definition of Marketing.” She gave Claire a very satisfied look. “…and Miss Santiago gave us that.”

Itinirik lang ni Sandra ang mga mata. Eh, di siya na bookish. That was what she wanted to say pero nagbago siya ng isip. “Okay, but I have a question, Ma’am!” she blurted instead. “Since when did working definitions matter?”

“What do you mean?” tanong ni Pat na bahagyang napahiya. She hated that the little horror is now trying to be a smartmouth. The nerve of this girl! Tumayo ito at sumandal sa whiteboard.

“What I am trying to say is kapag simple, mas effective. We’ll learn better by that.” the brat said while egging on her classmates to agree with her. Pakiramdam ni prof she was at the free-throw line holding the ball while the brat stood in the stands proudly leading the jeering crowd. “Hindi ba, classmates?”

Pat was fuming mad. “And since when did you get the audacity of telling me how to run this class?” magkasalikop na ang braso nito sa dibdib. She really couldn’t take that much pestering anymore.

“Peace?” she said while showing off a peace sign using both hands.

The class burst in laughter.

But Pat didn’t buy the joke. Not cute. And most definitely not funny.

“You can have peace and simplicity with me at detention!” pormal na pormal ang pagkakasabi nito na parang Queen of England na nagbaba ng decree. Gusto niyang turuan ng good manners and right conduct ang mahaderang dalaga. “I’ll see you at detention room at 2pm today.”

“Ma’am, this is not high school anymore.” protesta nito.

“So what if this is college? I am your teacher. I want to reprimand you so we’ll have a date later!”

“Date?” she asked playfully.

“At detention!” ulit ng naha-high blood ng teacher. Gusto nitong sumpitin ng munggo ang kausap.

“Oh…” Sandra said in exasperation. Pagkatapos, pamaktol itong sumalampak sa upuan. “Can it not wait? I have the whole Saturday?” hirit pa nito.

“No!”she exclaimed with finality. There’s no way she’s ever gonna change her mind.

“Sunget.” Sandra said in a hush. Alam niyang nasukol na siya.

Pat stayed serious although nagpi-fiesta ang kalooban niya. She was so happy that finally, she was able to one-up her. After all those bullying, naka-isa rin ako sa bruha. And I swore to my grandmothers grave she’ll gonna regret the times she pestered me.

She noticed though that her hand didn’t stop from moving. She's sure the schoolgirl kept on scribbling something. She just hoped it wasn’t a letter addressed to her father requesting for her ouster.

Chapter 5

She had no idea kung bakit sya nagmamadali gayung may sampung minuto pa bago mag-alas dos. Oh, she hated detention.

Her first happened during her freshman year nang hilahin niya ang silya ng kaklase dahilan upang mauntog ito at magka-slight fracture sa ulo. The poor girl was flirting with her guy friend at naiirita siya sa mga babaeng katulad nito. Hindi naman niya akalaing ganuon ito ka-lampa. And she paid dearly for it. Check that, her daddy paid dearly for it. Ito ang nagbayad ng madugong hospital bill. Siya on the other hand, spent her free time sa typing room para magpagpag ng alikabok for 3 days.

The last time happened two years ago when she was caught by her teacher cheating. Anong magagawa niya? She despises Math at kahit kailan, she will never waste her time memorizing those lame formulas. It’s better to cheat than to repeat. Pero ang siste, her seatmate didn’t cooperate. She was caught in the act of harassing the girl for answers!

Ewan, but she suddenly felt relief that Pat chose that place to detain her. She loves music, that’s why. It’s her therapy. The iPod could vouch for that. She has several collections na mahihiya ang jukebox at karaoke machine sa kanya. From classics to rock, meron siya. Music is indeed her element.

She knocked thrice and then twisted the doorknob para pumasok. Walang tao. The place was deserted. Binuksan niya ang switch and started to look around. She was so thrilled when she saw the grand piano standing proudly at the center of the room. Such a beauty. Nilapitan niya iyon at nagsimulang tipain ang tiklado nito.

Sandra played one of her favorite piano pieces. It was Johann Pachelbel’s Canon. Suddenly, all the chaos was gone. All the skeletons in her closet were gone and all that matters is music. Music shuttled her soul to a quiet place where everything is perfect. Just perfect.

Sa di kalayuan, Pat heard that familiar sound from the movie My Sassy Girl. Nangiti siya. It was one of her favorites dahil sabi ng mama niya, kamukha daw niya ang lead actress nito na si Jun Ji-hyun. And she couldn’t agree more.

Pat is pretty in her own way. She had this creamy complexion kahit hindi naman siya madalas sa spa. Her eyes are akin to that of a typical Chinese beauty. Her soft and plumpy lips were naturally pinkish in color.

She had no intention to disturb kung sino mang genius ang tumutugtog kaya dahan-dahan niyang binuksan ang pinto. What she saw floored her.

Si Sandra?

Chapter 6

She tiptoed her way towards her detainee na wala ta;lagang kamalay-malay sa presensiya niya. Prof couldn’t believe that the youngster had a hidden talent. Ang alam niya, she was just a typical teenager na walang inatupag kundi gimik at shopping. She was wrong.

Immediately, Sandra paused and turned around to see where the noise came from. She was surprised to see Pat standing behind her already. She was clapping her hands endlessly.

“Bravo!” she said.

“Pat, andiyan ka na pala?” she said half-embarrassed. She’s really not used to showing her soft-side to a stranger. Pero sa huli ay nagpasalamat na rin siya that it was Pat who saw her playing. Pogi points din kasi.

Prof cringed again at namulsa. “How many times do I have to remind you to address me properly?” hindi nito inaalis ang tingin sa kausap.

“Might as well allow me to address you that way.”

“Ayokong makipag-argue kaya sige hahayaan kita. But please—“

Ikinumpas nito ang kamay sa hangin. “…only when we’re alone.” pagpapatuloy nito sa dapat sanay sasabihin ng instructor.

“Good.” prof said in approval. “Was that Canon?”

“Yup. Did you like it?”

“Medyo.” she was hesitant to admit that because she knows na ikalalaki nanaman iyon ng ulo ng kausap.

“You did! I can see it in your eyes.” Paniniyak nito na may kasama pang kindat. “I wonder how many points that should cost.” umikot pa ang eyeballs nito na waring kinukumbulsyon.

“Go ask your music teacher.”

“She’s dead.”

“Oh—“ prof said in horror.

She knew that Pat is as gullible as the next girl. Her Latin honors in college can never beat her bratty humor. “Mapagpatol ka ano?”

“Okay, snap! That was not funny.” Pigil nya rito. “Are there other masterpieces you can play?” tanong nito hoping to put sense to the conversation na alam niyang mauuwi nanaman ito sa asaran.

“A lot, but what do you want me to play?” balik tanong nito sa guro. Sandra sat a little further to the left and motioned Pat to sit beside her. Prof obliged and did as she was told. Soon, they were finally brushing shoulders with each other.

“Why should I decide for you when you’re supposed to be in command of the piano?” hinawakan niya ang tiklado and pressed on Do.

“Because I want to play the song you want to hear!” she said as she hit Do, Re, Mi taking notice of how gentle her teacher’s fingers were.

“Why do we always have to argue, Sandra?” for the first time she dropped the Martinez and called her by her first name.

Natigilan ito ng bahagya. She thought her name sounded sexy coming out from her teacher’s mouth. “Aba, ewan ko sayo!? You’re the teacher.” “You’re supposed to tell me what to do. I have no right here.”

“What—?“

“This is detention and I am your detainee. Warden gets to decide on everything.” she pouted. “Me slave, remember?” she said mimicking a kindergarten.

“I could never outsmart you, no?” She tried the good cop, bad cop routine but she remains too pesky, too annoying.

“See? You always look at our thing as competition.”

“Our thing?” kinabahan siya duon. It was three years ago when she had a thing with someone. Bigla niyang naalala ang dating kasintahan.

“Yes, our student-professor relationship.

“Nothing… won’t you just play?” tinabig nito ang braso ng dalaga.

“Which is—?“

“It might be You.” She held out a sigh. She loved that song so much. It reminded her of Dustin Hoffman and the film Tootsie. Sino mang pinanganak sa dekadang iyon na di nagmahal sa It Might Be You ay jologs. Me ganun pa siyang naisip.

Sandra looked at her with a playful wince on her face. She wanted to laugh at her dahil stuck in the 80’s pa rin ito. Hindi lang yon, she was expecting her to request a Bach or Beethoven piece pero isang mushy song pala ang nasa isip nito.

“Cheesy mo ha?” she then placed her hands on the keys and started hitting the notes. “To my dearest Pat.” The piano let out a very sweet rendition of Stephen Bishop’s song.

Prof just sat beside her in amazement. She was a pester, proven na yon, but right at that moment, she seemed very vulnerable. Admittedly, she felt tenderness for her dahil duon. Ah, ngayon lang siya naniwala that first impressions do not really last. She wanted to give the lady a hug and tell her how sorry she was always for being stiff and combative. Pero syempre, hindi niya gagawin iyon. She’s still a prankster, afterall.

For the first time she felt in-synch with her.

“Something’s telling me it might be you
Yeah, it’s telling me it might be you.
All of my life…”

Chapter 7

They finished the song together. Still, Pat couldn’t hide her admiration for the young girl. She’s truly a gifted kid, pag-amin niya. She’s about to let her know kung paano siya humanga but the little devil struck once again.

“Pat, may jacket ka ba dyan? Yung makapal?”

“What, why—?“

“Ganun talaga, eh.”

“Do you play the guitar, too?”

“I can play just about anything.” she was telling the truth. “My former teachers said it’s my genius, my gift.”

“Oido ka rin?”

“Yeah. I just need to learn the basics and from there, madali nang lahat.” Pagmamalaki nito habang hinahaplos ang drum. “Music is my life, Pat. It is my escape.” Biglang sumeryoso ang mukha nito.

“From what?”

“Some shit.” she said without batting an eyelash.

“Whoa, watch your language Miss Martinez, please. That’s unbecoming of a lady!” Paninita niya rito.

Sandra swiftly turned her gaze towards her. “You know Pat, you do not own the world. You can’t hold your chin up and expect people to do what you want them to do.” Her face was gloomy. “Do you know what I believe in?”

“I don’t.” she really had no idea. They barely knew each other.

“My life is a constant failed audition. But I am still here singing even if I know there is no one there to supply the lyrics when I forget them. It’s only me.” She said while faking a smile. Tumatawa rin ang mata niya but it was a laugh that didn’t have substance. Sandra's eyes turned teary. Para itong kristal na kumikinang. So bright that it can illuminate the entire room.

“I can supply the lyrics for you, Sandra.” she offered at sincere siya duon.

“Really, now?” her face lit up for a few notches.

“Yeah, I can be your friend.”

Biglang rumehistro ang saya sa mukha nito. In an instant, she looked like a toddler na binigyan ng kendi.

“Thank you, Pat.” There was a hint of genuineness in her voice. “But I like you more as my enemy.” Biglang bawi nito while showing the devil’s horn gesture.

Pat didn’t feel like retaliating. Moment ng bruha ‘yun. And she was still in awe by her talent. Sa tingin niya dapat siguro ay libu-libong detention hours ang ipataw nya panlaban sa kakulitan nito para huwag lang silang mag-talo sa corridor, sa klase and Zeus knows where else.

“Aren’t you crushing on me yet, Pat?” nang-aasar nanaman ito.

“A warden doesn’t crush on her inmates, more so, sa mga alipin.” Binalik niya dito ang premise kanina. “Mabuti pa linisin mo lahat yan at magwalis ka pagkatapos.” She paused para mag-isip pa kung anong pwedeng gawin nito. Pinigil nyang matawa pagkakita sa problemadong mukha nito. “When you’re done, ilipat mo yung drumset duon sa kanan.”

“What? Drumset? Ambigat nun saka madudumihan ak—“

“Keber!” singhal niya. Umupo siya sa may teacher’s table and started reading her newest Coelho novel. She was really having a hard time cleaning up the room.

This is so much fun, brat. She said to herself.

Chapter 8

“That’s enough, Sandra. Pat knew that she was as tired as hell.

Sandra was pleased sa narinig. Tinapunan nya ng tingin ang guro and saw her wearing a straight cold, face. Stone cold soon-to-be oldmaid.

“Sige, Pat. I’ll just stay here for awhile. Mauna ka na.” taboy niya rito.

“Hmm… sabi mo, eh. By the way, how did you find detention?”

“Tiring.” she sat on the armchair at pinaypayan ang sarili gamit ang kanyang puting panyo. “You are such a slave-driver.” panunumbat pa nito habang hinahagod ang dibdib. Nagsimula na ring kumalam ang sikmura niya. The spaghetti she had for lunch was no match sa trabahong ginawa niya.

“Well, at least, you were able to do something worthwhile.” Pat gathered her things and dash her way towards the exits.

“Whatever—“

She was already rushing to her Honda nang masalubong niya si Claire sa hallway.

“Go ask your nanny.” matipid nitong sagot. Wala na siya sa mood makipag-kulitan pa kahit kanino lalong-lalo na kay Claire who she considers as her biggest rival.

“Sandali, Sandra.” She felt how strong and rough her hand was.

“What—?“ angil nya. She had no idea kung bakit ginugulo sya ni Clarita.

“May report tayo sa makalawa. Why don’t we brainstorm about it?”

“With all due respect, classmate, nilinis ko ang buong music room sa harap mismo nina Bach and Beethoven. I’m the Princess of HaggardLand. I’m hungry and I have no—“

“So, that’s what you did at detention? Claire gave out a sweet knowing smile. “Hahaha…” at tumawa pagkatapos.

Mixed martial arts? “Can you let go of my hand now?”

“You have 10 seconds.” That’s all she has. She’ll faint if cutie promdi go beyond that.

“See me tomorrow after class.

She is and always will be a princess.

She stood there as the snob ran towards her car. Never siyang humanga sa kapwa babae but this Sandra is one of a kind. Pinagmasdan niya ito and realized how lovely her classmate was. Oo at hindi ito pinong kumilos, but she noticed that her easy-going personality is quite fascinating.

Ilang sandali pa, Sandra’s car drove off at dumaan sa kanyang tapat. Kumaway sya dito ng bahagya. But Sandra didn’t wave back. Ang masama, nakatikim pa siya ng irap.

Snob. Himutok niya.

Seeing her from afar is like looking at an exotic wild animal.

The image of Megan Fox leaning towards Shia LaBeouf's car flashed as she returned her focus on her complaining stomach.

Nakakagutom. Haist. Sabi ng isip niya.

For those who are in pain literally, figuratively. ^_^

Chapter 9

Kinabukasan pagkatapos ng klase, Sandra kept her promise to help Claire out sa kanilang report.

“I like your place.” papuri nito sa pad na tinitirhan. Pinaikot-ikot nito ang mata sa living room. “It’s clean and spacious. Ilan kayo dito, Clarita?”

“Nice. Pwedeng tambayan.” hinawi nito ang blinds at tinignan ang labasan.

Claire went to the kitchen para maghanda ng meryienda. Nagtimpla sya ng iced tea at kumuha ng cheesecake mula sa ref. She went back to the living room and saw Sandra sitting comfortably on the couch. Nakataas pa ang paa nito sa center table at kumuyakoy.

Tumikhim siya. “Ahem… yung paa nyo ho mahal na prinsesa pakialis diyan at baka mabasag ang salamin.”

“I can pay for this, no! If you want, palitan ko pa ‘to kahit sampu.” pagmamayabang nito.

The brat detected a little nervousness on her classmate’s part lalo na nang magdikit ang pinkies nila nung tinanggap niya ang platito mula rito. Kung hindi siya nagkakamali, nag-blush pa ito. But then again, she just shrugged the thought and ate in silence. Then she went back scanning the place.

Sandali siyang napatitig dito. Her classmate looked awesome in her pambahay. Naka shorts itong maiksi at nakasando na kulay dilaw. Her bouncy hair rested on her slender shoulders. Her dark skin glowed like gold. For the second time around si Megan Fox talaga ang rumehistro sa utak niya. Kulot version nga lang.

Claire did the same examination sa kaharap. She was wearing a Levi's skinnies na binagayan ng pulang off-shoulder blouse nito. Nakatali ang buhok nito at kapansin-pansin ang makinis nitong balat. Sandra could easily mistaken for Devon. But then she changed her mind. She's better, hotter than Kuya's Housemate.

“No, thanks.” Tanggi niya. She wasn’t feeling well. Masakit ang kasu-kasuan niya and her head felt like it’s being crushed.

It was already four in the afternoon and Claire knew that her roomie is about to arrive. Ilang sandali pa, the door swung open at sabay silang napatingin dito ng kasama.

“It’s okay Claire.”

“You didn’t even say hi to me.” sa himig nitong kunwari ay nagtatampo.

“Hi!” sigaw nito mula sa ikalawang palapag. There was no pint of sincerity sa tono nito. "Hello! Happy Halloween! Merry Christmas!"

Napatawa lang silang magka-eskwela then silence followed. She requested Sandra to read about the proliferation of E-Commerce. Tinatamad man, tumalima ito sa kanya.

She was enjoying an article in Manila Times when Sandra winced in pain. She held on to her stomach. “Aray.”

“Bakit?” si Claire sa nag-aalalang tinig.

“Ang sakit ng tiyan ko.”

Sandra was sitting on the couch while Claire was sitting on the floor.

She marveled at how creamy her skin was.

She was sure it wasn’t normal. Para itong sinisilaban. Hinawakan niya ito at sinalat sa noo.

“Diyos ko, Sandra.” she was horrified.

“You have fever, Sandra!” She embraced her back at hinagod-hagod ang likod nito. “Dalhin ka namin sa duktor ha?” hinalikan nito ang buhok ng dalaga hoping that it could help ease her pain .

She was worried silly. Pinipisil niya iyon ng maigi while whispering something to her ears.

Everything’s going to be okay, princess. That’s what Sandra heard amidst the pain.

Chapter 10

She was in a state of extreme pain at hindi na halos maipinta ang mukha nito.

“I’m Dr. Enriquez.” Pormal na bati nito sa kanila. “What happened?”

“Doc, she’s complaining about tummy ache at mataas ang lagnat niya.”

“Yes, doc?”

“Masyadong elevated ang white blood cell count nya and she’s experiencing severe pain in her right lower abdomen which suggests—“

“Appendicitis?”

“Yes.” Pag-kumpirma ng manggagamot.” We will have to perform an appendectomy on her tonight. In fact, I’ve already asked the nurse to prep her for surgery.”

“Yes, appie is not entirely a difficult procedure.” “No, need to worry. Kaanu-ano ninyo ulit ang pasyente?”

“She’s my student, doc.”

“Then better call her parents so they would know.”

“Opo, doc.”magkasabay nilang sagot.

They were so worried. That’s a fact.

She was biting her nails. A nervous habit. “I really did.”

Claire said in an attempt to calm her down.

Claire smiled at the teacher’s silly theory. She thought it’s the best comic relief sa isang maaksyong gabi. Unfortunately, her parents were not home at tanging katulong lang ang napagbilinan nila.

Nadatnan nila itong natutulog. Hindi na sila umuwi. Claire sat beside Sandra at ginagap ang kamay nito while Pat was on the couch.

She looked at the clock at it reads 5:15 am.

“Sandra?” tanong ng dalaga.

“Unngggg…” panimulang sagot nito habang pinipilit imulat ang mata. “What happened? Why am I here?”

“Sshhh… wag ka munang magsalita. You had an appendectomy. Sumakit ang tiyan mo remember?”

Hindi ito agad umimik. Ibinaling niya ang ulo sa kanan and saw her teacher na nakatulog rin sa kapipilit. Bahagyang nakabukas pa ang bibig nito. “Yeah, I remember.

Claire just stared at her lovely face. Mas maganda pala ito kapag bagong gising. She looked so fresh and natural sa nakalugay nitong buhok.

She’s awake na.”

Nag-unat pa ito ng braso bago nagsalita. “Hah?” bumaling ito sa kama and saw her patient lying there looking at her. She wore a smirk on her face.

She was still grimacing in pain. “Susumbong kita sa daddy at mommy ko! Huhuhuhu!”

Dito? Dyan?” panay ang haplos nito sa kaeskwela.

“Patingin ka nga baka me lagnat ka rin.” the brat was at it again. “Stop scrutinizing me like a dressed chicken.”

“Sandra, I’m just worried okay?” katwiran nito at pagkatapos ay kumuha ng isang baso ng tubig sa mini ref. “Nag-alala rin ako.”

“Yeah, we did.” Susog ni Pat. “Give us a little slack.”

“I can give Claire a slack, pero ikaw? Hindi!”

“I’m sorry oka—“ She was about to ask for apology nang biglang bumukas ang pinto.

Iniluwa nito si Juan Eduardo Martinez. Sandra’s dad.

Chapter 11

He was a tall man perhaps a shade under 6ft. He was a very handsome and respectable man.

So, this is the father. Sa isip ni Pat.

“Mikaela?” dali-dali itong lumapit sa hostpital bed at umupo sa tabi niya. Then he planted a smack on her daughter’s forehead. “What happened to you? Ano nanaman itong kalokohang ginawa mo?”

“They are supposed to be here. They are supposed to be taking care of you.”

“Dad stop!” singhal nito habang inaalalayan ang tiyan. “You are the one who’s supposed to be taking care of me.”

“Damn it, Mikaela! You know I am a busy man!“ he swallowed hard. He will not forgive himself kung may mangyari sa anak. “But I took the first flight to be here. Can’t you see how worried I am?”

“Don’t be. My friends are here.” “See?”

“Good morning, Sir.” Bati ni prof. Hindi siya makatingin sa mga mata nito.

Tumango lang ito and asked the visitors to sit down. Ni hindi ito ngumiti. Eduardo has no time para estimahin ang mga panauhin.

“Okay, what exactly happened, Mikaela?” diretsong tanong ng ama. This time mas kalmado na ito. “At saan galing yang mga pasang iyan? Tell me…”

“I got over fatigued.” Hinawakan nito ang dibdib upang hagurin. “Kasi naman—“

Patricia’s heart pounded like a jackhammer. Hindi siya mapakali sa kinauupuan. She wanted to excuse herself subalit wala syang lakas para gawin ito. Patay na talaga, Pat.

“With all due respect, Sir, I—“putol niya sa sasabihin nito.

“Yes?” the old man pinned his eye on her saka namulsa. His eyes demanding for clarification.

“It was actually my fau—“

Sandra gathered her wits. She doesn’t want Patricia to earn the ire of the old man at baka masisante pa ito. She knew her dad very well at alam niyang hindi nito magugustuhan ang ginawa ng guro.

“Actually dad, I helped Miss Patricia, my teacher, to clean-up the music room.” she frowned a little bit to emphasize her point, gesturing to Pat to ride her story. “Nagwalis-walis ako, ganyan—“

“…at ako ang nagdakot, Sir…” Si Pat. “….ng kalat.”

“At ako naman ang nagtapon sa basurahan.” Si Claire. “Right, classmate?

Sandra joked.

“Exactly.” Claire and Patricia exclaimed.

Suddenly, a loud laughter burst into the suite room. He giggled like a ten year old boy na parang hindi na tatawa in the future.

“You mean to say….hahaha… napahawak nyo ang anak ko ng walis tambo?” paputul-putol na tanong nito sa gitna ng halakhak.

“Yes, Sir, pasensya na po at—“

“Why, that’s a first! Hahahaha!” tuloy pa rin ito sa kakatawa. “Good job Miss Patricia for making a slave out of this brat.” “Excuse me girls but I really need to smoke at hindi ko makayanan ang balitang ito. Hahahahaha.”

Siraulo pala tatay, ko? Sandra thought.

Once again, the three of them were left in the room.

“I haven’t seen my dad, laugh like that.” si Sandra na hindi maitago ang warmth na naramdaman para sa ama. “Thanks guys.”

“No, I’m not gonna do that to you.” Sandra answered back. They stared at each other na parang walang ibang tao kundi sila lang. She tried to give her the sweetest smile she can offer.

Feeling out of place, Claire cleared her throat and went in between them na parang hotdog na naipit sa sandwich. “We’d better get going, ma’am. May pasok pa tayo.”

Pat walked towards the mini cabinet to gather her things.

She tried to convince her.

You can have pizza, beer… everything.

“But—“

“I’ll come back later, okay? In the meantime, enjoy her company.”

“Alright, Patricia.” She finally gave in.

Pat was right, mas mainam nga na nagpaiwan si Claire. She felt safe with her lalo pa’t hindi rin nagtagal ang ama at umalis ito to go back to General Santos to attend to a very important business event. At least nga naman with Claire, may kausap siyang kaing edad nya.

“Sorry kanina ha? I was rude.” usal ni Sandra habang inihilig ang ulo sa unan. She wanted to take a nap pero gising na gising pa rin ang diwa niya.

“Okay lang, yun. Masasanay rin ako sa’yo.” Claire’s hand lingered on the sleeve of her hostpital gown. At least masosolo kita.Sabi ng isip niya.

That was the plan at nagawa niya iyong ng walang kahirap-hirap.

Ayaw nyang maging makulit but she’s finding a hard time kung ano ang mapapala nito sa pagbabantay sa kanya. Reward money? Hindi naman siguro. Perhaps she is really concerned.

“Gusto kitang bantayan.”

“No…no…hindi kailangan.” she waved her two hands sa pagtanggi. Hindi naman iyon ang habol niya. She really wanted to know her better. She can only think of two words: infatuation and admiration. Gusto niyang magpa-exorcise sa bagay na iyon. Why, she never thought she’d admire a woman ng ganuon kasidhi.

“Wala akong cellphone!” pag-amin nito. Boy, it took a lot of courage from her to admit that.

“What? Saang planeta ka ba nakatira ha?” gulat na gulat ito to know that at this day and age ay may tao pa palang walang cellphone.

Oh, and she felt sorry for her. She remembered her drawer.

She said while showing off her iPhone 3gS.

She has never seen someone as excited as she was na halos mag-abot ang dalawang dulo ng labi nito sa tenga. She stopped right there. Oh, nice set of lips. It was full at mukhang malambot. She’s always been fascinated sa mga labi. For some reason iyon ang una nyang napapansin sa kausap mapa-babae man o lalaki.

“Napatigil ka?” Claire asked to break the silence.

“Wala.

“That’s night the right term, silly. It’s full lips. Maganda.”

Nag-init ang pisngi niya sa papuri nito. “Siya, salamat.”

“Please be honest, bakit ka nagpaiwan?” Balik tanong nito. Still puzzled why the girl opted to stay gayung may mas importante pang bagay na dapat itong asikasuhin. Hindi naman sa ayaw nya talaga, at the back of her mind ayaw rin nyang makaabala.

“I am honest. I want some time with you. To get to know you para hindi naman tayo parang aso’t-pusa sa klase.”

“Aren’t you enjoying that?”

“Minsan I do. Matalino ka naman kasi in your own way.” Hinawakan pa nito ang magkabilang sintido. “You challenge me.”

“Sus, nambola ka pa. You’re the future member of the Dean’s List.”

“Hindi ka ba naniniwalang matalino ka?”

“I dropped out from high school! Saan dun ang matalino?”

“Tinamad ka lang siguro.”

“Hey, why are you making me feel good about myself?”

“Because I think you are really good!” muli siya nitong hinaplos sa buhok.

Then there was silence. Sandra liked the touch of her hand. Kinakantahan pa siya nito until she falls asleep.

“Nagka-boyfriend ka na?” she asked without any tad of tact.

“Hindi pa. Crush lang.” nahihiya nitong sambit.

“Sus, lame! I had four boyfriends already! One for each year nung nasa high school pa ako.”

“Ang dami na ha?”

“Yeah, but I dropped them all like a hot potato. Why, they bore me to death. Wala silang kabuhay-buhay. Parang trophy lang.”

“Oh, grabe ka. Hindi naman siguro?”

“Gusto mo magka-boyfriend?”

“Ayoko.”

“Eh, girlfriend?”

“Ha?” Claire was stunned. “Ah…eh..” she fumbled with her words.

“Halika dito. Inch closer. Titigan tayo.”

For some reason tumalima naman si Clarita. She leaned forward until they are face-to-face. Their eyes met at tila ayaw maghiwalay.

Their lips were just a few millimeters away from each other. But Claire controlled herself. Pumikit na lamang siya when Sandra’s gaze was turned to her sultry lips. Kung hahalikan ako nito, ang tagal naman. Reklamo niya.

When she opened her eyes, Sandra’s face was no longer there. Oh, that witch has done it again! She stood there in horror and shame.

“Huy, Clarita are you still there?”

“Oo.” pagalit na sagot nito. “Ano yung ginawa mo?”

“Nothing, Claire. Do you really wanna get close to me?”

“Gusto kitang maging kaibigan, Sandra.”

“Be careful what you wish for, Clarita.” She warned. Growing up from the province only mean one thing, pinalaki itong regular na nagdadasal tuwing alas-sais ng gabi, in short, conservative at mataas ang moral standards. She was sure as hell na mahihirapan itong tanggapin kung sino siya. “You don’t know me. I am not your typical teenage bestfriend.”

“Try me.”

“I’m gay! A hardcore one.” Walang preno si Sandra sa rebelasyon niya. Shewanted to get over and done with it.

“You mean you’re a lesbian?”

“Yes. A femme.”

Bagama’t nabigla, Claire didn’t show any sign of disappointment nor disgust. Nanatili lang itong nakatitig sa kanya. Looks definitely not gay to me. Kahit na para itong kiti-kiti kumilos, the way she dresses up and wear those make up seemed very girly!

Sandra waited for the lady to speak ngunit walang salitang namutawi sa bibig nito. Mas mabuti na rin iyon, naisip niya. At least hindi ito nagtatakbo gaya nang matalik nyang kaibigan when she divulged her true gender to her. For weeks, hindi siya kinausap nito.

“Wala namang kaso sa akin ‘yon.” Claire finally spoke.

But of course! Sa loob-loob ni Sandra.

“Are you gay, Claire?”

“No I am not.”

“Sige sabi mo, eh.” Sandra wasn’t convinced. She can sense that Claire has a tendency pero ayaw niyang maga-assume. At 17, she’s just probably curious. She’s at the point of her life where she could be struggling to find her sexuality.

“But people like you intrigue me. So I guess that makes me a curious cat.”

“I know. Hey, I’ve one more secret to spill.”

“What is it?

“Sssshhh… and I’ve got the hots for Patricia Fatima.” napatingin ito sa kisame. “Halata ba?”

“Oh—“

“Don’t tell anybody.” Sandali itong nag-isip. ”And it seems you’re the teacher’s pet kaya—“

“Ano?”

No way! I’m as straight as a nail. Or am I? Claire whispered that only angels and demons could hear.
